Everything that Could Go Wrong Did
[Small Town Omens]
I woke up in bed and reached for my phone. It asked me for my PIN. We’ve recently changed phone providers, and somehow I managed to enter the wrong code three times. After that, my phone was useless.
I lay there for a while, not fully awake, before getting up. My husband and my daughter were already outside in the yard. The front door had been left open.I made coffee (my life elixir) and stood there for a moment, thinking I’d take it outside in my new comfy sun chair. Instead, I managed to lock all three of us out. No one had a key.
We waited. Then we waited some more. Eventually, after a lot of back and forth, a spare key appeared and we got back inside.
Later that day I was driving through the central town’s only main street. On a small bridge I saw an old red tractor. A strange man was sitting on it, just passing through slowly. The yellow license plate caught my eye immediately. The number of the beast. Red ear protection on his head. For some reason, I couldn’t stop watching him in the rearview mirror.
Later that day we were driving to get some charcoal for our grill. Everything was going smoothly until I turned the key in the ignition. Nothing happened. The car was completely dead.
Some days just feel slightly wrong from the very beginning. Like something is just a bit out of place, but no one else seems to notice.
Also that tractor guy would have fit perfectly in a horror movie.
